The Rotary International Convention is being held in Toronto in 2018. What better chance for everyone to be able to participate. We are looking for a volunteer 'convention liaison ' to act as our club point person for international. Their job will be to keep our members up to date with all the convention plans and encourage participation. ClubRunner updates - send any stories or updates to Ken Siggins as he will be maintaining the web site. Elaine will be taking a leave of absence. Guest Speaker: Sharon Keller – E. L. Crossley - Beyond the Blackboard Annie Holtby introduced Sharon Keller who has been a Chemistry teacher at E. L. Crossley since 1983. She started their environmental club, E.A.R.T.H., which receives funds through grants and sponsors both Regional and National. This is the ten year anniversary of the club which has changed the face of the school campus by planting gardens and trees which have attracted butterflies and birds. In fact Crossley is now an official monarch way station. In 2018 the plan is to replace more non-native plants with native plants. Another of Sharon's projects is the vegan festival, which has engaged over 50% of the school population, or around 500 students. The 5 day vegan festival first held in 2016 has the students preparing and eating vegan meals and snacks. The 2017 vegan festival will be funded by the $3,000 prize they won from Learning for a sustainable future (LSF). Two of her students, Tessa Piccolo and Julia Labricciosa were keynote speakers at the LSF Eco Exchange forum in Milton. As if that is not enough Sharon also helped start the Crossley Drone Squad. This was the first high school based drone school in Ontario. They sourced parts and built the drones themselves and installed cameras so that they can see what the drone sees through special goggles. Sharon closed with a quote from Benjamin Franklin "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I might remember, involve me and I will learn" She has certainly done a great job of involving the students at Crossley. |
