The walk took place on Saturday Feb 17th. Fitness Trail Guest Speaker – Karen vander Zalm, from the I CAN-TER Association I CAN-T.E.R. has been in action for more than 25 years and Karen has been there for most of that time. She became the Executive Director two years ago when the founders decided to retire. They have an 87 acre property in Ridgeway. Their mission is to create a setting where individuals with and without barriers can experience the farm for rehabilitation, therapy, education & training, recreation & leisure. Among the programs offered I CAN-T.E.R. is an officially approved Training and Delivery Agency (T.D.A) for the Agricultural Apprenticeship Horse Groom - 600H Program. The only one in Ontario. There is also, in collaboration with Port Colborne Speech and Language Therapy, a program called Hippotherapy as a treatment tool for the provision of speech and language intervention. The term hippotherapy literally means “treatment with the help of a horse,” from the greek word “hippos” meaning horse. It refers to how occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language pathology professionals use evidence-based practice and clinical reasoning in the purposeful manipulation of equine movement to engage sensory, neuromotor. Karen told us about the horses used in their programs and how they need to replace some of the older ones and the challenges in selecting horses with the right qualities for this type of work. She invited Rotary to come to their facility any time to see them at work first hand. For more information visit the I-CANTEr website at http://www.icanter.ca |
