Welcome to Rebecca Rebecca MacPherson and Bradley Baranowski, our guest speakers from Brock
U, Greta Zsikla , our Youth Exchange Student and David Alexander, President
of the Rotary Club of Welland.

College. Bring your chairs – we’ll move inside if rain. Enter by Parking Lot G
off of Woodlawn.
September 14th. Mel has 14 tickets for the Friday night official opening of
Meridian Community Centre. September 15th. 101m – 3 pm Open House at
MCC. We have a table and need 2 people per each 2 hour slots including
930-1130 (half hour for set up), 1130-130, 130-330 (half hour for take
down). Annie and Paul S for slot 1, Mel Slot 2 and Maria slot 3 are on sign-up
September 18th. Mayors’ Debate and Volunteers. There’s a signup sheet
going around. Jody will send out the link to sign up at Event Brite as there
are limited tickets. She’ll include the poster to encourage attendance.
TV Auction. Deadline for getting items entered is Friday October 19. If not
in hand but committed it is ok to bring into our warehouse at the Seaway
Mall the next week. Try and get donor (where successful bid was low last
year) to do something different including a gift certificate instead of an item.
Gift Certificates often get bids worth or close to their value. Last year we
brought in $30,000 worth of donations and made only 16,000+, just 52%.
Let’s aim for $40,000 worth this year and a 60 percent minimum return. And
remember, the minimum value of donation is $60.
Christmas Party. Skating time has been booked January 2, 2019, 230-330.
Only date available.
Social outside of Rotary. Chase the Ace October 4th, Thursday night at the
Letter from Caterer from MCC.  An apology. There will be a chat before
January/Feb break at MCC.
Fundraising (Paul S) Gave out the sheet from meeting where the ideas first
came up. Please review and comment. If your idea is there, please expand.
And in addition, for our next fundraiser, the TV auction, please improve your
‘ask’ by 15%.
Guest Speakers: Rebecca MacPherson, Professor at Brock and Bradley
Baranowski, lead student on their team’s research on Alzheimer’s and
Lifestyle presented their findings. I tried to do justice to their presentation.                                                                                                                                                                                          Alzheimer’s is 5% familial (genetic) and 95% sporadic over 65 years of age. It is the
latter that Rebecca and Bradley researched. It also doubles every 5 years.
Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 64% of dementia. If inactive, 21% are more
likely to get Alzheimer’s. The combined risk of Diabetes, High Blood Pressure
and Obesity raise that percentage to 41%.Secretase is the biomarker for
Alzheimer’s. 9000 cases of dementia in Niagara include Alzheimer’s. The
research looked at mice, 20 weeks of age which is considered to be the adult
age. There were 3 groups –baseline, control and obesogenic. There was
tissue collection from control and obesogenic at the 33 week stage which is
considered 45-50 years in mice. The obesogenic diet exacerbates effects of
aging on key pathways involved in Alzheimer’s progression at a preclinical
age. The diet induced obesity and reduced activity. Implications? Lifestyle
choices made now, matter later.  Choose a healthy well balanced diet. Brad
cautioned that they’re not suggesting that we avoid fat and sugar entirely but
avoid the diet that leads to obesity. There is now communication with
Australian studies that are looking at pigs because the brain structure has
way more similarities to the human brain than the mouse brain does. When
asked what we could supplement our diet with, the response was Omega
3 – 3 servings of fish a week is good. You can use an Omega 3 supplement
as well.
The talk generated interest and interesting questions. I’d like to ask them
back in a year to see what else has been learned. Eat well, eat healthy!
Mel thanked Rebecca and Bradley.
Happy Loonies and 50/50 draw. Jody did NOT draw the ace of Spades.
Reminder: Next week’s meeting is an indigenous evening at Niagara College,
5-7 pm. Bring your chairs.
Go out and be the inspiration!
